Giant Mekong Catfish

Giant Mekong Catfish

These are the grey submarines of the lake. Reputedly the largest freshwater fish in the world growing to 770lb in weight, they are a unique catfish in that they have no barbules and no teeth.

The largest one verified as caught was a female fish of 646lb in 1981. They grow at a rapid rate and there are many fish in our lake over the 100lb mark. The Lake record is 350lb caught by Ross Davey in February 2020.

We have stocked 10 over 300lb and then of course there is the Hulk, stocked in 2018 at 440lb and is the biggest fish here at TopCats.

We liken the Mekong Cats to the “the friendly giants”. One fish known to many clients, Tyson has no dorsal fin and normally weighs in at about 70lbs. However even though they are friendly they provide the longest fights in the lake, never knowing when they are beaten.

They can be caught on a variety of methods, but the “smaller” ones are caught on the drop with a string of maize or a TopCats boilie.
